Article in November issue of the country and life mag South Africa 2008 When former Zimbabweans Vee and Colin Lockie moved from Cape Town to Bonnievale some two years ago, they didn't know what they were going to do next. They had sold the Edwardian home in Muizenberg that Colin had converted into a guest house and their two sons were working in England. They only thing they did know was that they wanted to escape city life! The gorgeous Breede River valley around the aptly named town of Bonnievale-a veritable land of plenty producing wine, citrus, milk, cheese and goats-had appealed to them, so they bought and renovated a former railway cottage on the outskirts of the town. But this left them with the burning question of how to make a living. While searching for idea's, they visited nearby Olyfberg Farm-one of South Africa's largest olive oil producers. "I found myself boasting to them that I could make olive oil soap" says Vee. Who remembered her Spanish great-grandmother's medieval recipe for just such a soap. This resulted in her getting a contract from Olyfberg to make soap for them, and that in turn inspired their new enterprise. The Olive Workshop. Today, less than two years later, Vee and Colin are working around the clock in a business that exploits their botanical expertise and medical back ground in addition to their soap-making skills, plus Colin's marketing and engineering skills and their eldest son, Robert's web master skills. Their other son, Richard, an organic farmer in Gloucestershire, is also involved long distance. Vee's botanical expertise come in because of something she remembered. This was how Colin's grandfather would get the chemist to make up an ointment from the fruit of the Kigelia africana (sausage tree) to treat his skin cancer Being passionate about potions and lotions and the medicinal properties of plants, Vee did research on Kigelia extract and the Olive Workshop now produces a range of medicinal body products made from olive oil and kigelia ingredients. Every week end Colin sells these at the Montague farmers market (they are also sold from outlets around the country)where he gets direct feedback from customers. "Its amazing that five out of every ten people who pass our stand either have a skin problem or know of someone who does" he says.
